DIVERSITY is simply bringing everyone into the same room, INCLUSIVITY is getting everyone to participate, and EQUITY is shifting the barriers of participation and leadership. ~Sonia Lewis

To make an impact in our daily lives, and within the institutions we inhabit, we must create change by starting with ourselves. Our perceptions, our attitudes, and our beliefs are clouded by things we THINK we know, and things we've been taught. We can't unlearn these things, but we can learn to do better. Take this course to make long-lasting change in yourself that diversity trainings can't always provide!

Here's an example of what you'll learn...

Short story about an interaction I had, that made me think about the stories we create in our mind about why other people behave the way they do.

I have worked in education for over 20 years, and the one thing that has been consistent, is the power of communication. It's often the type of communication we use that influences the outcomes of situations. I have served in many leadership roles at the community college from curriculum development, to program creation and event coordination. I am the co-founder and Secretary of the Board for Generation Reformation (a non-profit in the Bay Area, CA). I am also the contributing author for “Everyday Occurrences in Social Psychology”, and find happiness in forging creative works that include (but aren't limited to): sitting on comic-con panels, grant writing for non-profits, event planning, and making tutus. I look forward to learning with you!

This course has been tried and tested for over 10 years!

Through this course, you will learn about yourself, learn about others, and recognize the impact that social influence and perceptions play in your day to day interactions with others. We'll explore how you became the person you are today (i.e., important life events, home environment (growing up), cultural experiences, the attitudes you hold, etc.), and how to recognize similar patterns in others. This is a great class for teachers, leaders, and everyone in between.

"This has helped me, because now I have a basis of understanding on how to do so in the future. When I meet others now who are different from me, I can realize they have their own background..."

"This project gave me an insight into another world that I didn't even know. I have a greater appreciation for people from other countries living in the United States who hold on to their cultural values. I hear people all the time say, "You're in America", this expression [is] usually aimed toward people doing things differently...It is those people with whom I wish would have to do this project. I think that we all need to open up and embrace other cultures, as well as our own."
